Mace Group director gets technical at Building Magazine event

12/05/2009

Mace Group's involvement as delivery partner in the £600m Birmingham Gateway project was put to good use with Mace director John Worthington invited as a guest speaker at Building Magazine's Phase One networking event on 11th May.

Developed by Network Rail, Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and Centro (The West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive), the Birmingham Gateway scheme will see the current 1960s station transformed into a modern 21st Century transport hub for the region.

As lead project manager for the New Street redevelopment, John took the opportunity to explain the technical workings behind the complex project with detailed explanations on exactly how the working station will be transformed and delivered in time for the planned completion in 2014 and within budget.

Also speaking at the event was Network Rail’s head of design, Carol Stitchman who explained her involvement in planning the transformation of one of the UK’s largest and biggest stations.  The design package manager at lead consultant Atkins, Noelle Wright discussed the various sustainable technologies that will be incorporated throughout the project to help achieve a “very good” BREEAM rating.

The 100 construction professionals who gathered at the Rotunda in Birmingham for the event took full advantage of the open floor to pose questions to the project team ranging from worries about the final cost to keeping the station’s shiny steel façade clean in the future.
