A Mace Technology team will deliver a new sustainable heat capture technology for the Telehouse West project.

The surplus heat created by racks of servers will be used to power residential and business properties in the surrounding area. The decision to install the system stems from the strict regulations issued by the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Wind turbines, river water cooling and fuel cells were all investigated as ways to meet the renewables target, but client Telehouse concluded that none were feasible.

Telehouse estimates sustainable heat capture system will save 1,100 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, compared to a data centre without a waste heat scheme. As well as capturing waste heat for re-use, the site will also feature a solar array designed to provide the facility with 6,000kWh of power a year.

The nine-storey facility is due to open in March 2010.

The GLA are encouraging other data centre developers to deploy similar systems.
