Information

Mace's healthcare team has been working with the UK Department of Health and the Youth Justice Board since the beginning of 2009 undertaking a review of assessment tools in relation to the health and social care of young offenders in the community and in the secure estate.

This is another project Mace has been awarded by the Department of Health, Offender Health, together with the Youth Justice Board, relating to the health and social care of young offenders.

Young people who offend and are remanded or sentenced undergo a number of assessments before and throughout their sentence.

The purpose of this review is to identify what health and social care information is collected about young people who have offended from the assessment tools, both statutory and non-statutory, in use throughout the secure estate and by youth offending teams in the community.

Health and social care information gathered from assessments should be relevant and available at the earliest stage for young offenders in order to inform their integrated care planning throughout their sentence, during transition to release and for aftercare so that their needs are recognised and met.

The availability of accurate health and social care information on young offenders at the right time and in the appropriate hands supports the decision making for their journey into, out of and through the criminal justice system and facilitates their progress in achieving the Governments five Every Child Matters outcomes for all children and young people and support a reduction in re-offending.

This is a practical commission which involves working with stakeholders both in the secure estate and in the community, understanding and identifying issues and collecting best and emerging practice, in order to present all findings in a comprehensive report.
