Building for Education profiles Mace's work in the education sector

28/09/2010

In the latest issue of Building for Education magazine, Mark Castle, director at Mace, discusses the challenges faced by the education sector, with the funding restrictions imposed by the coalition government, and how refurbishment may be the answer to creating schools of the future.

Mark argues that although the previous government's Building Schools for the Future programme has been axed, the current government has given assurances that this does not necessarily mean the end of school construction projects. Indeed, the introduction of the Academies Bill could lead to demand for a wider range of school premises, for example, buildings converted from previous usages, such as commercial office space.

The feature was also used to highlight the nine schools and academies, with a total construction value in excess of £200m, that were delivered by Mace this summer, in time for the start of the 2010-11 academic year. These range from new build academies such as the Evelyn Grace Academy to the phased refurbishment of existing schools to provide fit for purpose accommodation, such as the Globe Academy.

Public sector director David Bill contributed to the article, providing an insight into Mace's consultancy offer to the education sector.
